This review is for the original 2013 Trail Tracker which has since been improved. Please visit the new review for updated specs unless you’re buying one used and want to learn about the old version. The Pedego Trail Tracker joins the likes of Surly’s Moonlander and Neck Romancer Pug which add oversized tires to create bikes that are goofy looking but actually quite functional on sand and snow. The difference with the Trail Tracker is that it was designed to be an electric bike from the ground up whereas the Moonlander and Neck Romancer Pug have only been converted into ebikes using aftermarket kits from BionX. The Trail Tracker is all about fun, goofing off and powering around like a big kid.
At the heart of the Trail Tracker is a 48 volt Lithium-ion battery pack sending lots of power to an extremely powerful 600 watt geared rear hub motor. This is one of the most powerful mainstream electric bikes out there and a good choice for larger riders who don’t mind the extra attention. Unlike its sisters, the Interceptor and Cruiser, this bike comes with flatter mountain bike style handlebars and offers a less “upright” riding position. The frame has been elongated and forks widened to accommodate the four inch tires. It stays true, however, to the all-welded frame design and twist throttle only drive system.
This bike is simple to operate and very durable. You simple insert your key into the rear mounted battery pack and twist then press the big red “on” button located on the throttle twister and you’re ready to go. A simple twist and the bike responds immediately, it’s like a big scooter. The max speed is limited to 20 miles per hour but you could presumably pedal faster. This isn’t exactly a race bike however, and the front wheel does handle somewhat differently than a normal bike due to the extra weight.
You won’t find fenders, lights, shocks or pedal assist on this bike but that’s not really the point. This isn’t designed for commuting, it’s all about romping around at the beach. At nearly three grand, it’s not a cheap toy but it is made well. Pedego has pioneered the cruiser style electric bike and the trail tracker follows the spirit of modded rock crawler trucks that can go places and do things no other vehicle can. You’ll be getting great support, high quality components and a system that can easily be fixed if you take a tumble. The battery, twist throttle and motor are all modular. Even with the extra hassle of unique tube sizes and tires, this bike is easy to maintain and should last quite a while providing lots of fun.

Harder to replace tires and tubes for unique size
All of the weight is at the rear of the bike (battery and motor)
Seat post shock can be vulnerable if you lift the bike up by the seat, be careful or consider a Thudbuster or other shock
Only comes in high step design, larger frame may be a challenge for smaller riders
