9 years agoFascinating discussion about speed range, Court. Thank you for demo’ing that. To me it seems like that eliminates part of the reason for having an ebike in the first place, at least for those of us who aren’t living in geographically flat areas.
Did I miss a comment about the bike’s brakes not having motor inhibitors? I’m assuming they are not needed because it’s a class 1 and simply stopping the pedals does the same thing? Perhaps you could confirm that. And about the Zero Cadence feature: I gather the claim is that the motor begins sooner than e.g. Bosch (responding to torque sensing alone?) altho’ in practice you haven’t found much difference between Bosch and Yahama mid-drives in that regard. For those of us shopping mid-drives, it seems like there remains a practical performance ‘cost’ when paying less for the Yamaha system. Fair conclusion?

9 years agoHi Jack, you’re correct that the brake levers do not have motor inhibitors (along with most of the newer advanced-cadence sensing Class 1 pedal assist models I’m been seeing). The motor cuts in and out quickly enough and relies almost solely on torque sensing so I suppose motor inhibitors aren’t as necessary.
You’re right on with the Zero Cadence comment, I think it’s mostly a marketing thing to make the system appear responsive and more powerful than competing technology when in reality (at least to me) it performs similarly from start but less well from pedal-discontinuation. My personal favorite mid-drive units are Impulse 2.0 and the Bosch Performance Speed. I think the smaller sprocket technology from Bosch is genius but it does cost more, has more moving parts inside to create the 2 to 1 conversion in speed vs. a standard sprocket and this creates some additional noise. For the price, Yamaha on a Haibike is still amazing and I liked it better than Shimano and TranzX.
